Markham (Clements Robert), géographe et voyageur né à Stillingfleet (près d'York) le 28 juillet 1830. Il entra dans la marine en 1844, prit part à l'expédition de 1850-51 qui rechercha Franklin, démissionna et fit des voyages au Pérou (1852-54 et 1860-61), d'où il porta aux Indes des graines de cinchona, explora ensuite Ceylan et l'Inde (1865 et suiv.) où il devint géographe officiel, accompagna en cette qualité l'expédition d'Abyssinie (1867-68) (L'exploration de l'Afrique). 

Parmi ses nombreux ouvrages, on peut citer : Franklin's Footsteps : sketches of Greenland (1852); Travels in Peru and India (1862); A History of the Abyssinian Expedition (1869); Memoir on the Indian surveys (1874); The Threshold of the unknown region (1876, 4e éd.); Peruvian Bark : Cinchona cultur in British India, 1860-80 (1880); A History of Peru (Chicago, 1892). Il a traduit en anglais le drame péruvien Ollanta (1871). (A.-M. B.)
