Wilkinson (Sir John Gardner), égyptologue né le 5 octobre 1797, mort à Llandovery le 29 octobre 1875. Fils d'un membre très actif de l'African Exploration Society, il partit pour l'Égypte dès qu'il eut achevé ses études, attiré par les découvertes récentes de Champollion (1821). Il y resta douze ans, réunissant une magnifique collection d'antiquités, et, arrivant de son côté, aux mêmes conclusions que Champollion pour l'interprétation des hiéroglyphes. 

Ses travaux sont nombreux et importants. Citons Materia hieroghyphica (Malte, 1828); The topography of Thebes and general Survey of Egypt (1835); Manners and customs of the ancient Egyptians (Londres, 1837, 3 vol.), complété un peu plus tard par 2 volumes sur la religion et la mythologie égyptiennes. C'est le chef-d'oeuvre de Wilkinson, et il lui a valu une réputation européenne.

John Wilkinson a laissé ses collections à l'école d'Harrow, où il avait fait ses études. (H. S.).
