Government bans illegal Amazon timber

Greenpeace welcomes today's announcement of a pact between the Amazon State of Pará, the world's largest producer of Amazon timber, the Brazilian environment ministry and representatives of the logging industry of a pact aiming to ban trade in illegal timber and timber from deforestation. Greenpeace hangs nuclear banner on Eiffel Tower
As the Union for the Mediterranean organised by French president Nicolas Sarkozy (1) launched in Paris today, Fifteen Greenpeace activists today hung a banner of a nuclear symbol on the Eiffel Tower (2). The banner was placed in circle of golden stars representing the EU. The stars sponsored by French state nuclear company Areva, have been on the tower since France took over the EU presidency on 1 July.

Activists charged for exposing whale meat scandal
Two Greenpeace peaceful protestors have been charged after they exposed a major scandal around the embezzlement of whale meat from the Japanese government-sponsored Southern Ocean whaling programme. The prosecutor in Aomori, Japan, today charged Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki with theft and trespass, and continue to be detained, despite widespread international protest. (11/07/2008)

Greenpeace confronts illegal fishing in the Mediterranean Sea
Activists aboard the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise exposed a pirate vessel fishing with a driftnet in international waters early this morning and retrieved a length of the illegal net. The Arctic Sunrise confronted the fishing vessel Luna Rossa in the Mediterranean Sea, around 40 miles west of the Italian island of Marettimo, off Sicily (1). (07/07/2008)

G8 leaders in Hokkaido, Japan (7-9 July) have the responsibility to fight climate change through committing to binding emission reduction targets and ending the global food crisis by addressing the causes behind it. 27 Greenpeace activists are taking non-violent direct action to stop climate-changing coal from being burnt at Eraring, Australia's most polluting coal-fired power plant.
